Juan was a Christian samurai who served Date Masamune and had a fief of 1,200 koku in Fukuhara, Mizusawa. In 1623, unable to withstand the oppression of Christians, he abandoned the area and fled to the Nanbu territory.
Afterwards, his whereabouts were unknown, but he lived in hiding in present-day Kitakamizawa at the beginning of the Kanei era, but eventually moved to Nishikamisawa and was passed down to the same family as the founder of the current Goto family.
A few years later, an informant appeared and was executed by officials at this location in front of the house. This anecdote has been secretly passed down to the current Goto family.
Naturally, there was no grave, and an anonymous stone was erected as a grave marker, but it has now been moved to the old Goto family cemetery where a memorial service is being held. The large "Juan Monument" is a memorial monument erected in 1951.
